Object of the week returns...What is it?

What might this have been used for? What are its primary materials, composition? Possible date? Feel free to post comments to the blog...

  1. My guess is that this is a laced bodice for a gown. It looks almost like a silk or satin material with beaded decals. Perhaps nineteenth century?

  2. I would suggest a late 18th century bodice made of linen or possibly cotton. I can see laces and bead work, as well as what I believe are stays at the bottom of the picture. Without being able to see more I am limited on what I can see and therefore what I can really suggest about the dating, it may also be 19th century.

  3. I would guess this is the back of a gown from the 18th century. Because of the elaborate design I don't think it is an undergarment. I think it worn as the outermost layer and meant to be seen. The fabric has a shiny quality that resembles silk. The bodice is also framed by beading and there is some roping around the beads. I would also guess this was worn by an individual of the upperclass because the delicate beading would not be practical for a woman doing laborious tasks.
