Object of the week- what is it?

Okay, I was stumped by this one. Look at materials and set up (as well as the "prop").  I will not be able to bring it with me on Tuesday, but have fun!

  1. I have no idea on this one. And google has been no help. I am guessing this is some kind of finishing rack for clay pipes, perhaps to give them a good color and odor after making them. Put a bunch of finished pipes in the middle, nice smelling wood in the front and back. Use the instrument that looks like tongs to place burning coals in with the wood and cover it over with a wooden box so the pipes absorbe the nice smelling wood smoke.

  2. I'm stumped too. It's metal and must relate to the pipes that are inside it. The wood shavings seem to suggest that maybe it's some sort of carving machine, and the long circular pieces look like they serve as carvers, but there doesn't seem to be any way for the thing to move. I would say that maybe it could be used to finish pipes too, although I don't know about whatever the object is next to it.
